After almost seven years of continuous growth, the 24 th November of
2003 Savona launched its new Cruise Terminal, in order to meet the requirement
of the cruise market. It was named “Palacrociere
Savona” and it took
the place of the old facility built in 1996.
The project was co-financed
by Savona Port Authority and Costa Cruises, which administrates independently
the terminal that has started to operate in November 2003.
The official launch of the Palacrociere was
celebrated at the presence of the Mayor of Savona,
Mr Carlo Ruggeri, of the
President of Savona Port Authority, Mr Alessandro Becce, and
of the
President and Managing Director of Costa Cruises, Mr Pier Luigi
Foschi. It was the occasion for describing the multifunctional structure
of the terminal, realised inside the new dock of the port of Savona,
for giving some information about its technical features and for presenting
the logo and the name “Palacrociere
Savona”.
The Palacrociere, whose construction started in 2002, was projected
with the aim of welcoming the passengers of cruise vessels. Thanks
to its particular structure, designed by the famous Spanish architect
Ricardo Bofill, and to the functionality of the distribution of its
internal spaces, the new terminal will assure to cruisers high-quality
services, transforming the traditional waiting areas in entertainment
spaces, personalised depending on the age of the passengers.
The terminal is provided with a Children and
Teen club, an Internet
Cafè, a Conference Room, a VIP lounge and a Bar, and the interiors
are enriched with art works made by savonese artists, inspired by Leon
Pancaldo voyages, and with local handicrafts, among which the famous
Albissola pottery.
The embarking and disembarkingoperations have
been projected to reduce at the minimum waiting time, eliminating, in some cases, the classical
check-in operations.
Great attention has also been reserved to cruisers' security and to
the environment in which the new terminal operates. As well as the traditional
cruise operations, the Palacrociere will hold
shows, conferences, meetings, conventions, becoming a new multifunctional
point for the entire city of Savona.
The
terminal consists of
three level floor with a 1,200 m² terrace,
a total covered area of 8,300 m²,
of which 4,800
dedicated to passengers (a 3500 m² departure hall, and two
mezzanines of a total area of 1,300 m² ) and a 3,500
m² baggage claim section. A covered
parking area for buses, taxis and cars is also provided.
In addition, the 100-metre quay extension,
completed in 2003,
which assures a 450-m operating quay, allows two vessels to be berthed at the
same time.
Costa
Cruises manages the Palacrociere
Savona directly, with a 22-year
concession. It is a leader in Italy and Europe and the largest
cruise operator in Savona.
Costa
Cruises' interest in Savona dates back to 1996, when the company
began using it as a port of departure for its cruises.
In 2004, 180 calls are foreseen in Savona.
